guest editor: john galliano

kate moss & john galliano photographed by tim walker for vogue uk, december 2013.

john galliano is the guest fashion editor for the december issue of vogue uk -  i'm sure kate moss had much to do with it & bravo.  galliano was stunned to receive the invite, he says, writing in the magazine: "how they tracked me down here with my dog gypsy, i'll never know."  can't wait to see it!

the importance of being earnest

the daily mail is reporting that stephen fry is in early talks with designers john galliano, roland mouret & sarah burton for one of them to create costumes for when he takes to the stage next year as the lady bracknell in the importance of being earnest, which fry will direct.
galliano once worked as a dresser at the national when judi dench performed as lady bracknell. fry told his producers david pugh & dafydd rogers that he wants the sets & gowns to get applause when the curtain goes up.
nobody does a show like galliano....just sayin'!

cathy hornyn's fall from grace

cathyrn hoyrn wrote a scathing piece for the new york times that i refuse to link to. it is an oddly mean spirited point of view. i love the response at muthafuckingsuperior.tumbler.:  it's an excellent read....go here.

excerpt from muthafuckingsuperior:
galliano has always been rather odd, i knew him in his early days, but even then he was using heroin. i know because his then boyfriend told me that they used it together and used to fight about it. john was so strange then, deeply pretentious, highly anxious, absurdly talented, hugely grandiose - being with him was akin to holding a panicked bird in one's hands.

galliano in the wilderness

john galliano photographed by annie leibovitz for vanity fair, july 2013

in his first interview since his 2011 firing from dior, 52 year-old john galliano sat down for a series of wide-ranging conversations with contributing editor ingrid sischy. beyond his anti-semitic rant, which shattered the designer's career, galliano and sischy talked of the designer's young life, including beatings and childhood taunting; his fashion education and the development of his eye; and how being "a slave" to his success led him down a path of addiction. looking forward, sischy writes of galliano's future: "he has begun taking baby steps to re-enter the world of fashion. my prediction: get ready for his second act." read more of the preview here, available in full in the july 2013 issue.

i can't wait for him to come back. i know a lot of people can't forgive him but people make mistakes & do stupid things. he is such a talent & should not be discarded.

smart suzy

suzy menkes, editor of the international herald tribune sat down with fern mallis for an interview at the 92nd street Y. among the topics discussed were john galliano:

"it's a tragedy. we know that creative people have all sorts of demons," menkes said. "i would never say that i love hitler in any shape or form ever, and i don't know many people who would. that's not to say that somebody with such brilliant talent shouldn't be given some kind of second chance. but how do you do that is difficult."

it's so refreshing to voice such frank opinions. read more of her interview at wwd. (you will love her advice to kanye west).

i heart galliano

"he told me to walk as though i'd been dancing all night, for three days, in a spanish café with some beautiful spanish men and my hair was all wet from sweat."

karlie told the cut at last night's party for CR fashion book that these were the instructions john galliano gave her before the oscar de la renta show.  j'taime!

the victoria and albert museum announced its 2013 exhibition club to catwalk: london fashion in the '80s, curated by the v&a head of fashion, claire wilcox. it will look at how the impact of underground club culture reinvented fashion. more than 85 outfits from designers such as john galliano, vivienne westwood, betty jackson, rifat ozbek, pam hogg & katherine hamnett will be on display.  the show will be divided into fashion "tribes":  fetish, goth, rave, high camp & new romantics.

in addition, the organizers are working to reunite a series of 22 levi's jackets commissioned by blitz magazine & customized by designers that include vivienne westwood, richard cornejo, zandra rhodes, paul smith & jasper conran. (there is also a denim jacket customized by leigh bowery with fringes of bobby pins!)

the show will also include accessories from designers that include judy blame, patrick cox & bernstock speirs and archive magazines such as the face, i-D & blitz.

the show opens in july 2013.

man, this takes me back....i used to stay up all night making "outfits" and getting dressed to go out.  now that "hipster" fashion is available at the local mall i wonder what will happen to the creativity of this generation?  i remember going to new york & seeing all the club kids dressed in crazy outfits & make-up and being so inspired. it was all about originality and creativity.... i'm going to have to dig out my old hamnett t-shirt!

galliano found guilty

john galliano was found guilty on all charges of making anti-semitic comments. he will serve no jail time and the court gave him a suspended fine of 6,000 euros ($8,415). the plaintiffs were awarded one symbolic euro each. he was also issued a suspended fine of 2,000 euros for a separate incident in october of 2010.
galliano was not in court to hear his sentence. His lawyer aurélin hamelle spoke to the bbc about the verdict, saying "there is no penalty so to speak which is a very strong sign by the courts, because it shows the court took into account his sincere apology, the fact that mr. galliano undertook treatment for his addiction." before the trail began, hamelle had said that galliano "was a sick person who was suffering from addiction & this something we are demonstrating through medical evidence, export reports." "we must not judge a man, who for 30 years, has been dedicated to diversity, who has been a loving person for all races, cultures & religions...based on 40 minutes where he was sick through alcohol & medication."galliano testified that he suffered from an increasing workload & that he had had no time to mourn after the 2007 death of his close friend, designer steven robinson.
hopefully this will be a new beginning for an amazingly talented man.  i look forward to seeing what mr. galliano does next.

galliano

john galliano arriving for court this morning

in better times with kate moss

john galliano stood trial today for allegedly hurling anti-semitic abuse at customers in a paris cafe.
plaintiff geraldine bloch is seeking 1 euro on moral grounds while her boyfriend, philippe virgitti is asking for 220,000 euros for compensation based on "moral damage".  if convicted, galliano faces up to 6 months in jail & a fine of 22,500 euros.
during the trail, galliano said that he did not remember much of the events that lead to his arrest. he revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol, barbiturates & sleeping pills. he also added that in addition to the pressures of his work he had not dealt with the death of his long time collaborator & friend steven robinson. "steven protected me from everything so i could concentrate on being creative. with his death, i found i had no protection." he said that he turned to sleeping pills after the death of his father. "i really did not take the time to mourn." the verdict is set to take place on september 8.
in other news, it is rumored that galliano is working on kate moss' wedding dress at the atelier of a leading fashion designer in new york despite denials that he would be designing her dress. "kate knows that john is deeply sorry for what happened and has always been a loyal friend," a source supposedly said.
i really hope it's true....although he should be punished for his mistakes he should also be given the chance to recover and move forward. he is so gifted and such a talent - we who love fashion would be at a terrible loss if he were unable to return to the industry. hopefully kate moss, who was supported by many designers & fashion insiders during her scandal, will be the one to help galliano take the first step back. i still & always will love john galliano for the talent he is regardless.

john galliano fall/winter 2011, paris

john galliano's signature collection was shown this afternoon on the avenue foch. sidney toldedano, chief executive of dior (and a major investor in galliano's brand) was there and helped editors through the crush on the stairs. the presentation closed with coldplay's "viva la vida"....

seas would rise when i gave the word
now in the morning i sleep alone
sweep the streets i used to own
i used to roll the dice
feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
listened as the crowd would sing
now the old king is dead, long live the king
one minute i held the key
next the walls were closed on me
and i discovered that my castles stand
upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
i hear jerusalem bells a-ringing
roman cavalry choirs are singing
be my mirror, my sword and shield
missionaries in a foreign field
for some reason i can't explain
once you'd gone there was never
never an honest word
and that was when i ruled the world
it was a wicked and wild wind
blew down the doors to let me in
shattered windows and the sound of drums
people couldn't believe what i'd become
revolutionaries wait
for my head on a silver plate
just a puppet on a lonely string
oh who would ever want to be king?
i hear jerusalem bells a-ringing
roman cavalry choirs are singing
be my mirror, my sword and shield
my missionaries in a foreign field
for some reason i can't explain
i know st. peter won't call my name
never an honest word
but that was when i ruled the world
