anyone whose goal is "something higher" must expect some day to suffer vertigo. what is vertigo? fear of falling? then why do we feel it when the observation tower comes equipped with a sturdy handrail? no, vertigo is something other than the fear of falling. it is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.

wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
do not go gentle into that good night.

vulcanic lake, the dead sea: no fish, weedless, sunk deep in the earth. a dead sea in a dead land, grey and old. old now. it bore the oldest, the first race. the oldest people. wandered far away over all the earth, captivity to captivity, multiplying, dying, being born everywhere. it lay there now. now it could bear no more. dead: an old woman's: the grey sunken cunt of the world.

when you have seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no vocation but to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him; and you are torn by the thought of the unhappiness and night you cast, by the mere fact of living, in the hearts you encounter.

drawing of ed by alessandro tomassetti

i met alessandro tomassetti on my quest for the perfect scent. i stumbled into this amazing tiny shop filled with beautiful things....for BOYS! still, i always considered it one of my favorite los angeles stores until he shuttered up and threatened to leave us all for somewhere more glamourous.
he now has a collection of made-to-order shirts on his site, filius design, where you can order short or long sleeve, choose your fabric and choose among classic and out of the ordinary styles. he also hand makes bowties - one is varnished birchbark!
he is an amazing artist, as you can see from the sketch above....i'm dying to have him draw me - as long as he re-touches as he goes! if that weren't enough he is genuinely one of the loveliest gents you will ever meet. hands down.
i love the fact that everything is hand-made locally. so head over to his site and support this amazing craftsman. the bowties are the perfect gift for the holidays and are crazy affordable. and who doesn't love a man in the perfectly tailored shirt?

paris 1962 - tom palumbo

this amazing set of images was taken in paris in 1962 after the ysl show by tom palumbo. (the woman laughing is wearing ysl) if you are not familiar with his work he was an amazing staff photographer at vogue from 59-62 and harper's bazaar from 53-59. these images were shot around les halles (which doesn't exist as it did then). absolutely stunning. makes you wish you were at that party.

dior homme for the ladies

dior homme is launching a line of women's denim this spring under the name "petit taille" or small size. the denim is "modeled after the men's collection, the women's ultraskinny line is made from premium japanese denim and has been adapted for the female figure with a touch of spandex for added flexibility." prices range from $400 to $1,200. i know alot of the ladies have worn dior homme over the years .... but isn't dior homme for women just good ole' dior?
