dennis hopper died on saturday after a grueling battle with prostate cancer at the age of 74. hopper was an actor for over five decades starring in such classics as easy rider and apocalypse now. "i should have been dead ten times over" he told an interviewer a decade ago. "i believe in miracles. it's an absolute miracle that i'm still around." peace out easy rider.

100 11th avenue by jean nouvel

photographer philippe ruault has captured the newly completed 100 11th avenue apartment block by architect jen nouvel. there are over 1,650 different window panes across its curved surface & every glass panel of the curtain wall is tilted at a different angle.

mercedes-benz unimog expedition camper concept

the mercedes-benz unimog concept camper comes equipped with a corner kitchen in the rear that comes with a two burner gas stove, sink & drain, a bathroom behind the driver's seat featuring a cassette toilet, wash basin & shower. hot water comes from a 10 liter combined gas/electric boiler. a (lockable) passage leads to the cab, with a wardrobe fitted on the right behind the co-passenger seat. the 110 liter compressor fridge occupies the space up to the entrance door. there is also a dinette, a double bed & additional stowage space under the bed. the camper will be on display in bad kissingen from the 3rd to the 6th of june. see more details here.

refuge in patagonia

this refuge from architects armando montero & diego labbé is located in the fjords of the aysén region, bahía de melimoyu, patagonia chile. the isolated area is only accessed by sea or air - the mountains & virgin forests end abruptly at the sea.

sarah burton named creative director at mcqueen

sarah burton, who worked alongside mcqueen for sixteen years has been named the creative director at the label. "the creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was a the heart of lee's vision. i intend to stay true to his legacy" she said in a statement.

theyskens + theory?

olivier theyskens is designing a capsule collection for theory for the upcoming spring 2011 season. hmmmm....i'm not quite sure what to say about that collaboration. time will time?

margherita missoni is launching her first collection of handbags as the newly appointed accessories designer for her family's fashion house. there are 5 bags, some using the signature missoni zigzag prints, that are named after and inspired by her best friends: a crocodile, leather & suede patchwork shoulder bag name "euge" for euenie niarchos, a wool & lace carryall in red called "tats" for tatiana santo domingo (not pictured above), a green quilted leather bag with chain straps called the "lsd" for lauren santo domingo, and the matching "coco b" and "coquine" both named for coco brandolini. the bags are priced from $1,275 to $3,140 and can be adorned with detachable missoni pompoms.

gaultier to exit hermés

hermés announced today that jean paul gaultier is leaving as creative director of the brand. "after seven fruitful years of creative partnership, hermés and jean-paul gaultier, artistic director of women's ready to wear, have decided to bring to an end their collaboration allowing jean-paul gaultier to concentrate on his own projects" read the release. "hermés is deeply grateful to jean-paul gaultier for his outstanding creative contribution during these seven years." i really loved what he did with the collection. always beautiful and elegant and covet-able!

LUGGAGE is available in three sizes: mini, medium & oversize & is available in baby buffalo, smooth calfskin, suede, mongolian lamb, crocodile, python & thick collegiate-stripe flannel. the color palatte (of course) are deep neutrals like beige, khaki & black. and yes i want one of each!

happy (belated) birthday bob

i had such a crazy day yesterday that i missed mr. zimmerman's birthday! there is no other like dylan & probably never will be. bob dylan changed the course of my life and shaped who i am as a person through his music - i will always love him. happy belated birthday.

hermés archives

hermés has released images of bespoke luggage from it's archive made for danish author karen blixen (a.k.a. isak dinesen), who wrote out of africa. the crocodile skin cases were ordered in 1930 and 1935. hermés noted that the more complex of the two took its craftsmen 368 hours to make. both feature inlays & engraving, with most pieces adorned with a baroness' crown & the author's monogram DBF (dinesen blixen-finecke), a combination of her maiden & married names (her full title was baroness karen von blixen-finecke). the cases feature compartments & leather boxes for spirits, smoking accessories, writing instruments, notepaper, perfume bottles, cosmetics, playing cards, jewelry, small tools, sewing items, brushes & more with some items finished in sterling silver & tortoiseshell. however, hermés notes that the items appear to be unused & probably never made it to kenya & therein lies the mystery. noting that by december of 1930, when the cases were first ordered, blixen was down on her luck and preparing to leave africa. the archives are unclear as to whether she ordered the cases or if they were a gift from another.
