excentrique(s)

excentrique(s) by artist daniel buren for the 2012 annual monumenta at the grand palais in paris. buren's installation attempts to reconcile the human scale with the cavernous environs into which it has been inserted. it functions as a continuous canopy of twister-colored circular pavillions that cover the space's 13,500 square meter ground floor. the resulting supra-structure is calibrated to the minimum height required for the standard paris apartment, forming a low-lying enclosed space that drowns visitors in dampened color & light-laced shadow.

waste landscape

artist elise morin & architect clémence eliard of design studio SML (small medium large) in collaboration with 104.fr have collected, sorted & hand sewn 65,000 cds & turned them into rolling hills of shiny aluminum in the centquatre at the halle d'aubervilliers in paris.
the artists explain, "the project joins a global, innovative & committed approach, from its means of production until the end of its 'life'. waste landscape will be displayed in locations coherent with the objectives of the project: art's role in society, raising consciousness towards environmental problems through culture, alternative modes of production & the valuation of district associate work & professional rehabilitation...waste landscape is at the crossroad of contemporary art, landscaping & environmental concerns.
the installation has a life cycle in which it will be exhibited in multiple spaces, built into different formations in each one. as time goes on the cds will be recycled into polycarbonate, the final step on the artists' part to convey the concept of "waste" & transformation.
waste landscape will be at the halle d'aubervilliers in paris until 10 september, 2011.

savage beauty - preview

savage beauty, a retrospective of alexander mcqueen's work will kick off the annual met ball on may 2.
the catalogue of the exhibit was recently released and an interview with mcqueen's successor, sarah burton by tim blanks is included.
burton tells blanks that when mcqueen first got the call from LVHM to go to givenchy, he thought they were calling him to do a handbag collaboration with louis vuitton (the hot thing at the time). she recalls, "we had one pattern-cutting table, which used to belong to body map & flyte ostell, with chairs that didn't reach the table. when lee got the givenchy job, we got chairs that reached the table and he was really excited because it meant there was money coming in, and he could do things he'd never done before."
quotes from mcqueen about each collection are included....one of my favorites:
i'm an avid follower of the news, and sometimes you just can't take any more war, any more disasters, and you just want to remind yourself there's beauty in the world. [with the collection] i wanted to show a more poetic side to my work. it was all about....a feeling of sadness, but in a cinematic kind of way. i find beauty in melancholy."  (this is in regards to the last photograph above) i think i love this statement so much because part of me fears that i can so relate to it....
