at the end of 1911 picasso met marcelle humbert  (also called éva gouel). he separated from first love, fernande olivier, shortly after in may 1912.  she became ill in early 1915 with tuberculosis and died on 14 december of that year. picasso was devastated and fell into a depression. he professed his love for her by painting "j'aime eva" and "ma jolie" in some of his paintings.
