dreaming of other places

guerlain idylle

guerlain commissioned french designer ora ito to create this amazing bottle for their perfume idylle. the tear shaped flacon is plated in gold with an 18 carat gold stopper. it is encased in baccarat crystal resembling a bubble or halo....to get to this $45,160 perfume you will need to break the crystal ball! definitely decadent.
(the aroma was created by perfumer thierry wasser and is composed around 2 notes: bulgarian roses & the plessis robinson rose. these have been combined with patchouli, white musk, lily of the valley, lilac, peony, freesia & jasmine)

biosphere 2

the biosphere 2 was billed as "the first large habitat for humans that would live & breathe on its own, as cut off from the earth as a spaceship". the $200 million sealed environment included its own one million gallon artificial sea. it was a near instant failure. the first closed mission lasted from september 26, 1991 to september 26, 1993. sadly, today it is over-run and decaying. these photographs were taken by noah sheldon.

william gedney 1932-1989
i am slightly obsessed with his work at the moment. maybe it reminds me of my childhood in the georgia countryside and then in a coal mining village in pennsylvania. he shot everywhere across the united states, from kentucky to san francisco and new york. he travelled to europe and india and all along the way he photographed people from the inside. he kept extensive notebooks which are now housed, along with his photographs, in a collection at duke university. he was diagnosed with aids in 1987 and when he died in 1989 he left his work to the care of his friends, photographer lee friedlander and his wife, maria. it's an amazing collection and well worth taking the time to have a look.

reknit it

truly great idea! every month at reknit, haik's mom will take your old knitted garment & turn it into something new. for january she's turning your old sweaters into scarves. they're available in 2 styles and are $30 each (what a steal!).

brrrr....

in the north-eastern russian republic or sakha (yakutia), the village of oymyakon is commonly called the coldest populated place on earth with an average winter temperature of -45C.
most homes in oymyakon still burn coal & wood for heat & enjoy few modern conveniences - mobile phones, even if a service was available in the area, would not work in such extreme cold.
residents reportedly leave their vehicles running all day and warn visitors against wearing glasses outside, as they will freeze to a person's face.
oh how i love southern california!

what watt?

what watt? chandelier by tim fishlock is a memorial & celebration of the humble incandescent lightbulb. by 2011, all forms of the incandescent light bulb will be phased out. what watt? marks the passing of a design that has remained relatively unchanged for 130 years. The piece is illuminated by a single low-energy bulb and is made up of 1243 suspended bulbs or various shapes and sizes.

how cute are these? the vuitton family made wooden animal toys that were collected by gaston louis vuitton's wife, renée, more than 60 years ago. at the opening of the louis vuitton avenue marceau store in 1954, for lv's 100th anniversary, gaston dedicated the first floor of the store to his wife who turned it into a "salon de jouets" or toy store that closed in 1970.
the animania collection is inspired by those wooden toys....i want the squirrelly and the hummingbird and and and.....oh, they are all too cute! available at louis vuitton stores worldwide.

comme des garçons

with all the new spring/summer 2010 ads floating around this week, i think the comme des garçons is close to perfect. cheeky, irreverent and and super stylish, it is totally representative of the label itself.
