i am slightly obsessed with his work at the moment. maybe it reminds me of my childhood in the georgia countryside and then in a coal mining village in pennsylvania. he shot everywhere across the united states, from kentucky to san francisco and new york. he travelled to europe and india and all along the way he photographed people from the inside. he kept extensive notebooks which are now housed, along with his photographs, in a collection at duke university. he was diagnosed with aids in 1987 and when he died in 1989 he left his work to the care of his friends, photographer lee friedlander and his wife, maria. it's an amazing collection and well worth taking the time to have a look.
