lya de putti was a hungarian actress in the silent era. she was born as amalia de putti in vécse, hungary in 1899. she began her stage career on the vaudeville circuit in hungary. in 1918 she made her screen debut in berlin where she performed in the ballet. she became the premiere danseuse at the berlin winter garden in 1924.
she came to america in 1926 and then to hollywood in 1927. despite working with big names, she found little success, probably due in part to her heavy hungarian accent. in 1929 she left the screen to return to broadway.
there, she was hospitalized to have a chicken bone removed from her throat & contracted an infection. she was taken to harbor sanitarium in nyc where she developed pleurisy and pneumonia. she died there in 1931 at the age of 32.
she really reminds me of drew barrymore - don't you think?
