frantisek drtikol

sisters, 1932

seated nude, 1920s

nude profile, 1920s

2 women, 1928

feny, 1927

czech photograher frantisek drtikol was born in 1883 in the mining town of pribram, west of prague. he studied photography in munich where he was heavily influenced by the art noveau. in 1910 he opened a studio in prague where he shot portraits of some of the most important figures of his day. in the 1920s he focused on expressive nudes reshaping the genre of the classical nude by synthesizing a new aesthetic influenced by silent film, avant garde art, expressive dance and art deco design until he eventually eliminated the live model entirely in 1930. ultimately live models were not always malleable enough to capture his ideas - in the latter phase of his work the figures he introduced became flattened, elongated & stretched, sometimes in rhythmic patterns. his studio in prague was was of the most successful in europe in the 20s and early 30s but abruptly in 1935 he gave up his photographic career to return to painting. he sold his studio and drifted into obscurity devoting himself to mysticism & the seclusion of a hermit's life.
he died practically forgotten in 1961.

puss

how cute is the cat on river viiperi's head? i love heem!

i fell in love with a dead boy

i'm having such a hard time thinking about alexander mcqueen....someone i had never met but knew so well - or so we thought. it's so hard to think that someone with such talent who should have been so happy couldn't make it. i don't know why this has hit me so hard...maybe because he was so iconic to the fashion world....i just feel so sad.

les femmes de jacques henri-lartigue - coco

there is so little information available on marcelle "coco" paolucci online. they met in 1933, married in 1934 and divorced around 1941-42. i know that her father was the head electrician at the cannes and deauville casinos - during this period lartigue had earned a reputation as a painter and worked as an interior decorator at the cannes casino which is where they must have met. there is really only the one photo of her from the front, and believe me, i've spent hours online looking for her! in 1942 he met his last wife florette in monte carlo and that is the last of coco....one enigmatic, beautiful picture. if anyone has more please email me - i'd love to see her! next is the delicious & stunning reneƩ perle....a lack of photographs is definitely not a problem with her.
